Description |
Richard Kershaw was born in Sheffield and was a successful chef before becoming a winemaker. He arrived in South Africa in 1999 after travelling extensively and by 2009 he was chief winemaker for Mulderbosch and Kanu. Richard Kershaw Wines dates from 2012 to create site specific, clonally selected Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Syrah from the cool Elgin Valley east of Cape Town.
Richard’s Elgin Syrah comes from 5 small plots planted with two differing clones of Syrah, each plot and clone are fermented separately, undergoing a three day maceration before fermentation began then after24-27 days the wine was racked off into barrels, a mix of 500L and 225L 40% new, the remaining skins and pulp was given a light pressing and the juice added for extra body. The wine rested in barrel for 17 months before blending and bottling. Region Elgin Region |
Tasting notes |
The cool Elgin climate gives a more Rhone like feel to this excellent Syrah with bacon rind and peppery notes to the nose and cool black fruits with classic spice note and ripe balanced tannins, this is drinking now but will keep too. |
